SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of making an optical multilayer protective element and an optical multilayer protective element made using said method. A decorative layer is formed on and/or in a base layer. The decorative layer has a first area and a second area. The decorative layer, when viewed perpendicular to the plane of the base layer, has in the first area a first transmission coefficient and in the second area a second transmission coefficient greater than the first transmission coefficient. On the first side of the base layer there is a layer to be patterned and a photoactivated resistive layer. The decorative layer serves as an exposure mask when exposing the resistive layer through the decorative layer. At least one layer to be patterned and the resistive layer are patterned using synchronised processes with a perfect register which form a structure.
