SUBSTANCE: invention relates to agriculture and can be used in machines in forming cylindrical bales of crop material. The method of applying a preservative during baling is performed using a baler having a preservative application system and a sensor of the bale size. During the bale formation the bale size monitoring is carried out using the sensor of the bale size. The set bale size is determined, indicating the achievement of the area of the sealed outer layer of the bale. Application of the preservative to the crop is controlled by the preservative application system in response to the bale size determined by the sensor.
EFFECT: use of invention enables applying of at least one preservative at a controlled rate.
