The method includes detecting a data item; classifying the data item using one or more properties associated with the data item to form an associated set of classification properties, wherein said one or more properties include existing classification properties associated with the data item, wherein the data item is classified by one or more classification components; aggregating the sets of classification properties when the data item is classified by two or more classification components; applying a policy to the data item based on at least one of the set of classification properties and the aggregated sets of classification properties.
