SUBSTANCE: invention relates to peer-to-peer networks used in a communication system, specifically to a peer-to-peer protocol for streaming content. According to the peer-to-peer protocol, a peer-to-peer network includes multiple associations and multiple peer-to-peer entities which receive content distributed by a source on a network. Each of the plurality of peer-to-peer entities is part of at least two associations. If content is generated, the source divides the content into multiple data units and assigns each data unit to an association. Each data unit is transmitted to peer-to-peer entities relating to the association assigned the data unit. When a peer-to-peer entity in an association receives a data unit assigned to said association, the peer-to-peer entity distributes the data unit to other peer-to-peer entities in the association. Additionally, the peer-to-peer entity transmits the data unit to peer-to-peer entities in other associations. Furthermore, the peer-to-peer entity receives data units assigned to other associations from peer-to-peer entities which are not members of the association.
