FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to abrasive articles on a binder, suitable for high-speed grinding. An abrasive article comprises an abrasive body on a binder with abrasive particles which contain microcrystalline alumina (MCA) enclosed in a binding material. In the abrasive body on the binder, the pore volume is at least about 42 vol % of the total volume of the abrasive body on the binder. The abrasive body on the binder is capable of polishing a metal-containing workpiece at a rate of at least about 60 m/s with material removal rate of at least about 0.4 in3/min/in (258 mm3/min/mm). In another version, the binding material contains not more than 20 wt % boron oxide (B2O3), wherein the ratio of the percentage content by weight of silicon dioxide (SiO2) to the percentage content by weight of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) is not more than about 3.2, where in the abrasive body on the binder the pore volume is at least about 42 vol. % of the total volume of the abrasive body on the binder, and the abrasive body on the binder is capable of polishing a metal-containing workpiece at a rate of at least about 60 m/s, with a cutting depth of at least about 0.003 in (0.076 mm).
EFFECT: improved operational properties of abrasive articles on a binder for high-speed polishing.
