FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to removing carbon dioxide and other pollutants from a waste streams. A method of removing carbon dioxide contained in a gas stream includes the following steps: (a) obtaining sodium hydroxide in an aqueous mixture; (b) mixing the sodium hydroxide with carbon dioxide obtained from a source to obtain bicarbonate products or a combination of carbonate and bicarbonate products in a mixture; and (c) separating said products from the mixture, thereby removing carbon dioxide from the solid mineral product which contains 70 wt % sodium bicarbonate; where the hydroxide is obtained by: obtaining a sodium salt; mixing the salt with an acid and water, an acid and steam or an acid, water and steam to obtain protonated brine; and performing electrolysis of the protonated brine to obtain sodium hydroxide; where step (b) includes shifting the product equilibrium in favour of obtaining bicarbonate products.

EFFECT: high efficiency of removing carbon dioxide gas and high output of carbonate.
