SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a controller for a headphone arrangement, particularly to limiting of volume levels from an earphone of the headphone arrangement. The technical result is achieved through a controller for a headphone arrangement, which comprises a drive circuit which generates a control signal for an earphone from an audio signal. The drive signal is fed to the earphone causing the earphone to reproduce the audio signal. A first circuit determines a signal level for the audio signal and a second circuit determines an ambient sound level from a microphone signal from a microphone. A third circuit determines an attenuated ambient sound level for the user from the microphone signal and an ambient sound attenuation of the earphone. A gain controller controls the gain of the audio drive circuit for the audio signal in response to the ambient sound level, the attenuated ambient sound level and the signal level.
EFFECT: improved user ear protection owing to determination of ambient sound level.
