FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method of attenuating a composite audio signal comprises steps for sampling the composite audio signal; transforming the sampled audio signal, using a fast fourier transform algorithm, to produce a signal representative of the amplitude of component frequencies of the audio signal; comparing the transformed audio signal with a predefined impulse control threshold profile, representing the target maximum amplitude for each frequency component for the audio signal threshold profile to produce a configuring signal representative of the difference between the broadcast signal and the profile; using the configuring signal to automatically configure in real time a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter so that it attenuates the amplitude of the transformed audio signal in frequency bands centred on the frequencies at which the target threshold is exceeded; and outputting the attenuated audio signal for consumer exposure.

EFFECT: increasing audio quality by compensating for the level of background noise.
