SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the subsurface disposal of solid or solidified radioactive wastes. The method for the subsurface disposal of radioactive wastes includes digging a pit, concreting its bottom and walls, and forming a screen with an absorbent substance at the base of the pit. Several areas of the soil mass suitable for insulating radioactive wastes are selected. Multiple measurements are made to determine the permeability coefficient of local water and the shortest distances within the soil from the boundary of the location of the radioactive wastes to the first aquifer from the surface. Statistics on the climatic regime are gathered. The value of the risk factor ru of a hazardous concentration of radionuclides falling into the active water exchange zone is determined for each area. Areas with ru>1.0 are eliminated from consideration. Of the remaining areas, the area with the least value of ru is recommended for construction. A subsurface burial site is built on that area of the soil mass.
EFFECT: invention enables to prevent the transfer of radioactive wastes from a subsurface burial site into the environment due to the poor-quality construction or breakdown of engineering barriers thereof.
