SUBSTANCE: invention relates to process variable parameter transmitters used in process monitoring and control systems. A process variable parameter transmitter (10) includes memory (16) which stores a filtered sensor value, which is calculated based on a previous received sensor value, and a filtered rate of change value, which is calculated based on a previous rate of change value. The process variable parameter transmitter (10) also includes a controller (14) which receives a sensor value and compares the sensor value with a filtered sensor value to obtain a rate of change value. The controller (14) also compares the rate of change value with the filtered rate of change value to obtain a deviation value, and generates an output indication, such as an output warning on sensor failure based on the deviation value.

EFFECT: faster transmitter operation.
