FIELD: technological processes; metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: method consists in vacuum-plasma application of multi-layer coating on cutting tool and can be used in machining. First, bottom ply of molybdenum nitride is applied. Then upper layer of titanium, niobium and molybdenum nitrides at their ratio, wt%: titanium 84.5-90.0, niobium 6.0-10.0, molybdenum 4.0-5.5. Coating plies are applied by three cathodes arranged horizontally in one plane. First cathode consists of titanium and niobium, second one is from molybdenum and located opposite to first one while third cathode is composed of titanium and molybdenum and located between them. Bottom ply is applied with the help of second cathode while top ply is applied by first and third cathodes.

EFFECT: as a result, coating with good strength properties, which enables to increase cutting efficiency.
