SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of operating a tachograph. Tachograph includes application controller (2) and security controller (3). Applications controller (2) is associated with memory (5) and security controller (3) is associated with other memory (6). Encrypted program code (DPC) with at least one associated digital signature is provided in security controller (3). Through security controller (3), encrypted program code (DPC) is decoded and is verified by at least one digital signature. It is determined whether decrypted program code is designed for applications controller (2) or security controller (3). Depending on determination, program in memory (5) and/or other program in other memory (6) by means of decrypted code (EPC) at least partially is replaced, and depending on verification result, at least partially replaced program and/or at least partially replaced another program is deblocked for execution.

EFFECT: tachograph protection from manipulations, improving reliability.
