SUBSTANCE: patient interface device includes an elastomeric contact portion configured to engage directly with the user's skin. The contact portion has an engineered surface comprising a plurality of predetermined non-random surface elements configured to reduce friction and improve comfort for the user. For one option, the pitch between each pair of immediately adjacent surface elements is less or equal to the predetermined maximum pitch, wherein the height of each surface element is less than or equal to the predetermined maximum height value.
EFFECT: reduced mask friction on the user's skin.
