FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: to produce fused corundum, source components are mixed, the charge is ignited, and the process is initiated of self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS). The source components, iron aluminide thermite components are used which react exothermically, as a result of which the fused corundum is produced. The product is cooled and ground. As the tooling, metal casing is used lined with crushed slag phase of the previous heats.
EFFECT: invention provides to produce fused corundum with Al2O3 contents at least 94 percent without using expensive refractory tooling.
