SUBSTANCE: method comprises a stage of comparing the target input of vector s with a plurality of centroids, wherein each centroid is a corresponding class of the code vectors in the codebook. In addition, the starting search point, which refers to the input target vector in the codebook, is determined based on the comparison result. The code vectors in the codebook are sorted according to the least distortion, reflecting the distance between each code vector and the class centroids. The vector quantizer and the method allowing to find first the code vector class containing the most likely code vector-candidates in respect of the input vector s.
