Abstract RU 2648806 C2

FIELD: engines and pumps.

SUBSTANCE: method of converting a turbofan engine, comprising a core engine, comprising at least one high pressure spool assembly and a combustion chamber; an unmodified fan configured for providing at least a bypass flow bypassing the core engine, the fan being mechanically coupled to a low pressure turbine that is in turn driven by the core engine; the unmodified fan being configured for providing an internal through the core engine. Method includes providing a converted turbofan engine from the turbofan engine by converting the unmodified fan to provide a modified fan, configured for generating a reduced bypass flow with respect to said fan bypass flow during operation of the converted turbofan engine, to thereby enable said low pressure turbine to generate an excess shaft power above a baseline shaft power required for driving said modified fan during operation of the converted turbofan engine, wherein said modified fan is converted into a modified fan by reducing the outer diameter of the fan blades or by replacing said blades with fan blades whose diameter is reduced; wherein the unmodified fan is further configured to obtain a first degree of pressure increase for the inner flow to the core engine, wherein the conversion of the unmodified fan to a modified fan is performed so as to obtain a second degree of pressure increase for the inner flow to the core engine instead of the first pressure increase degree. Alternative method for converting a turbofan engine and corresponding converted turbofan engines are proposed. Method and converted turbofan engine in accordance with at least one example of the invention disclosed herein provide, in comparison with the traditional approach of converting a gas turbine of the turbofan type to create a gas turbine based on an aircraft engine, at least one of the following advantages: in comparison with the traditional approach, the total development time can be significantly reduced and/or fewer tests of the corresponding engine based on the aircraft engine may be required. Compared with the traditional approach for creating a corresponding engine based on an aircraft engine, relatively fewer changes in the original engine hardware (i.e., unmodified turbofan engine) are required.

EFFECT: in comparison with the traditional approach, fewer new parts will be needed to convert and manufacture the corresponding engine based on an aircraft engine.
