SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a polyethylene composition suitable for the production of protective coatings for metal pipes, in particular steel pipes, as well as a method for producing a polyethylene composition. Composition has a density of 0.938 to 0.948 g/cm3, MIF/MIP ratio of 15 to 25 and MIF of 30 to 45 g/10 min, where MIF is melt flow index at 190°C with a load weight of 21.60 kg, MIP is melt flow index at 190°C with a load weight of 5 kg. Polyethylene composition has Mz equal to or greater than 1,000,000 g/mol and a long chain branching index (LCBI) equal to or greater than 0.55.

EFFECT: composition of the invention has a high processing speed and/or low moulding temperature, stability of flow characteristics, and an improved balance of impact resistance at low temperatures and environmental stress cracking resistance (ESCR).
