FIELD: internal combustion engines.
SUBSTANCE: drive unit for driving a load comprises a gas turbine, having a gas generator, a load coupling, an electric motor/generator, a flow-changing device, arranged and controlled to change combustion-gas flow through the gas turbine. Gas generator comprises a rotor, at least one compressor and a high pressure turbine driving at least one compressor of the gas generator and a power turbine comprising a rotor which is not coupled by torque with said rotor of the gas generator. Load coupling connects the rotor of the power turbine to the load. Electric motor/generator is mechanically connected to the rotor of the gas generator and electrically connected to the electrical network and is operable, selectively, as a generator for converting the mechanical energy received from said gas turbine, into electric power, and as a motor for adding drive power to the load. Flow-changing device comprises a set of movable nozzle guide vanes located at the input of the power turbine to control the speed of the power turbine. Movable nozzle guide vanes are arranged and controlled so that when the electric motor/generator is in generator mode, decrease in the rotor speed of the gas generator due to the increase in the resistive torque caused by the electric motor/generator is compensated by the opening of the movable nozzle guide vanes, ensuring an increase in the enthalpy decrease in the high-pressure turbine.
EFFECT: invention is aimed at widening the operating range.
