SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to a drill rod gripping device and to a drilling rig with said device. Apparatus for gripping and imparting rotational motion to a drill rod comprises: a frame having a front end and a rear end; sleds mounted at the frame via at least one support configured to allow axial movement of the sleds relative to the frame; first and second jaws mounted to allow movement to and from each other; a plurality of rod engagers mounted at each of the first and second jaws. At least one of the engagers can be rotatably driven by a drive actuator. Apparatus comprises at least one attachment assembly for securing at least one of the first and second jaws on the sleds so that at least one of the first and second jaws is slidable over the width of the sleds by non-rotational lateral linear movement in a direction transverse or perpendicular axis. At least one support comprises a pair of elongate runners mounted at and extending between the front end and rear end of the frame. Sleds comprise a pair of bushings which are slidably mounted along a corresponding runner. Sleds is suspended in a floating position with respect to the frame. At least one of the rod engagers comprises an abrasive surface for increasing the frictional force between the drill rod and at least one rod engager.

EFFECT: technical result is effective grip of the rod.
