FIELD: internal combustion engines.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in internal combustion engines. Method for controlling engine (10) comprises, after engine (10) shutdown, determining engine oil viscosity based on time to drain said oil back into an engine sump and oil temperature during said draining. Engine (10) operating parameter is corrected based on said determined oil viscosity. Engine (10) operating parameter is determined by the throttle or angle in throttle plate (4). Throttle plate (4) is controlled by engine controller (12) to regulate the air sucked into engine (10). Versions of the method for controlling an engine are disclosed.

EFFECT: technical result consists in revealing the real viscosity of the oil and the possibility of changing engine performance based on the obtained real viscosity of the oil.
