SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of geophysics and can be used to automatically generate a tectonic structure from the data of a potential field. Method includes pretreating the gravitational potential field data and/or the magnetic potential field data from the zone to be examined, multi-level and multi-directional edge detection with respect to pre-processed data of a gravitational potential field and/or data of a magnetic potential field and obtaining edges at all levels separately, thinning the computed edge of each level to a one-pixel width by means of an algorithm for determining the morphological skeleton. Each point has properties of depth and intensity. Method also provides for a comprehensive tectonic structure and a comprehensive tectonic structure with intensity mapping. Geological structure formed by the reservoir deposit can be identified and qualitatively interpreted, in accordance with the a priori knowledge of the zone to be investigated. Also determine the type of potential deposit and the properties of the structure formed by the conditioning deposit, and select tectonic structures of different types, thereby obtaining the location of the zone of the exploration object – the deposit of metal ores.
