FIELD: radio equipment and communications.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of radio communication. Radar detector (10) suppresses alerts from vehicle guidance systems by sweeping (206, 208) for a consistent radar signal; centre frequency of the signal is stored (212) and detector (10) suppresses (218) warnings of radar signals near that frequency. Detector uses enhanced method (300) for suppression of signals near a known location of a false signal source; in the event the detector detects a radar signal and finds a matching stored false signal, the detector will first compare (310) the strength of the received signal to a threshold strength that is computed (308) based upon the distance of the detector from the stored false signal and will only suppress signals below threshold.

EFFECT: suppression of false alerts about locally generated radar signals.
