SUBSTANCE: invention relates to computer equipment. Disclosed is a method for detecting legacy storage devices, said storage devices connected to a host system, configured to receive asynchronous status messages from storage devices, wherein the legacy storage devices contain associated metadata, wherein the associated metadata may falsely indicate that such storage devices have removable media, the method comprising steps of: sending a media polling message from said host system to a first storage device, said media polling message querying whether said first storage device is ready; if said first storage device responds as not ready, updating a database that said first storage device has truly removable media; and disabling further media polling by said host system to said first storage device if said first storage device does not have truly removable media in order to reduce power consumption of the system.
