SUBSTANCE: invention relates to audio processing, in particular, to audio processing with overlapping windows for analysis or synthesis in the audio signal processing chain. Processing device for processing an audio signal comprises: analyzer for obtaining a window control signal from an audio signal indicative of a change from a first asymmetric window to a second window, or indicating a change from the third window to the fourth asymmetric window, with the second window being shorter than the first window, or the third window being shorter than the fourth window; window designer for building the second window using the first part of the overlap of the first asymmetric window, wherein the window designer is configured to determine the first part of the second window overlap using the truncated first part of the first asymmetric window overlap, or wherein the window designer is configured to calculate the second part of the overlap of the third window using the truncated second part of the overlap of the fourth asymmetric window; and a window function processing means for applying the first and second window or the third and fourth window to obtain portions of the windowed signal function.
