Method includes receiving an operation for a file in a protocol interface for sharing file access (SFA), a representation state transfer protocol (REST) (SFA-REST interface); accessing a file service to perform an operation corresponding to said file, wherein the file service includes a plurality of tables, which plurality of tables stores file states in the distributed file system, wherein the SFA-REST interface comprises integrated SFA protocol and REST protocol functionality for accessing files in a distributed file system; processing said operation based on the SFA-REST interface and performing this operation based at least in part on identifying the file state for said file, which is stored according to the file service scheme of said file service.
