SUBSTANCE: invention relates to creation and verification of identity cards. In the method of providing identification services: receiving identity data for a physical person for whom the identity provider issued an identity card; generating a transaction for storing an identifier which represents identity data in a data structure on the distributed system ledger; sending a transaction to at least one distributed system node; and generating an identification token, which includes an identifier which represents identity data. In the identity verification method: receiving data extracted from an identification token, wherein the retrieved data includes an identifier which represents identity data; determining whether a data structure containing a retrieved identifier representing the identity card data is stored on the distributed system ledger; and issuing identity validity indication associated with identity card data, based on said determination.
EFFECT: improved protection of identification card.
