FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an ion cooling method. Method is implemented on the basis of ion trap with possibility of dynamic change of potential well depth. There is a change in the ion self-energy due to cyclic variation of the trapper pseudo-potential pit depth. At that, adiabatic cooling of trapped ions takes place. Cooling cycles are synchronized with the ion oscillations phase in the trap.
EFFECT: technical result is the possibility of implementing a cooling method, which is universal for different types of ions, namely, for cooling of ions practically all types of atomic and molecular ions having excited or natural fluorescence, as well as simplification of equipment for achieving a higher degree of cooling of ions below the Doppler limit.
