FIELD: physical chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: method is proposed for raising the efficiency of a silver-based epoxidation catalyst containing a carrier containing at least 80% alpha-alumina and having a pore volume from 0.3 ml/g to 1.2 ml/g, a surface area from 0.3 m2/g to 3.0 m2/g, and a pore structure that provides at least one of the following characteristics: tortuosity of 7 or less and 1 or more, narrowing of 4 or less and 1 or more, and permeability of 30 mD or more; the catalytic amount of silver located on and / or in the specified carrier; and the promotional number of one or more promoters located on the specified carrier; which additionally includes: initiating an epoxidation reaction by reacting a raw gas composition containing ethylene and oxygen present in a molar ratio of about 2.5:1 to about 12:1, in the presence of a silver-based epoxidation catalyst at a temperature of about 200 °C to about 230 °C; and the subsequent temperature increase is either step by step or continuous. The efficiency of the catalyst operating in accordance with the present invention is excellent both in terms of greater activity and in terms of significantly higher selectivity.

EFFECT: effective conditioning technique has been developed for use in the epoxidation of olefins, which does not adversely affect characteristics of the catalysts.
