SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to an upper power drive for a downhole drilling rig and a method for operating a drilling rig. An upper power drive for a downhole drilling rig includes: a carriage configured to be supported by a rig mast in such a way that the carriage is capable of substantially vertical translational movement relative to the mast; a fork having a first end mechanically connected to the carriage; torque tube mechanically connected to the second end of the fork; an upper power drive mechanically coupled to the torque tube in such a way that a substantial portion of the upper power drive is below a substantial portion of the carriage; and an actuator mechanically connected to the fork for translational movement of the upper power drive in a direction having a horizontal component relative to the carriage.
EFFECT: stable transfer of reactive torque to the mast.
