SUBSTANCE: invention relates to biotechnology. A method and device for identifying and counting the number of microorganisms present in the sample is presented. The sequence reads are classified using existing methods, but the classification results are adjusted to calculate the estimated number of reads that are expected to be misclassified, which is determined by modeling. If statistics are available on the expected number of misclassified reads, a linear least squares method (non-negative or otherwise) or other appropriate technology can be used to adjust the number of reads classified by different taxonomic units (e.g., by species) and to determine more accurate values for the number of taxonomic units actually present in the sample, eliminating taxonomic units that were mistakenly identified as present in the sample.
EFFECT: invention makes it possible to more accurately identify the species present in the sample, and more accurately determine their number, providing a more accurate identification of the conditions or causes of the patient's disease.
