SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an automatic machine for applying coating to bindings (2, 3) of books (1) of different sizes, starting from a sheet (5) of film; the machine comprises a working plane (23) wherein said sheet of film is located, a tool (81, 82) for welding and cutting the sheet of film, a first (91) and a second (92) tool for folding the edges (7, 8) of the sheet of film and a control unit (100) adapted to control the welding and cutting tool and the first and second folding tools depending on the size of the book (La, Lu, D) to perform the operation of applying coating to the book bindings. The machine contains receiving (10) and gripping (20) tools configured to receive a book with open bindings in the supplying position (A) and adapted to grip the book block (4) of the book outside of the working plane (23) and to transport the book to the working position (A1) over the sheet of film to perform the operation of applying coating to the book bindings.

EFFECT: technical result is improved technology of applying coatings to book bindings.
