SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a transporting apparatus for transporting a strip metal roll, comprising a roll transporting carriage with a running gear and a roll support made adjustable by height relative to the running gear. The transporting apparatus has a movable fixing apparatus with a clamping unit for pressing the transported roll against the roll support, wherein the clamping unit is configured to be adjusted by height relative to the roll support and at least partially inserted into the clearance of the roll. The fixing apparatus is attached on the roll support or on the running gear of the roll transporting carriage. The roll support has a recess whereto the clamping unit is at least partially lowered. Additionally, the invention relates to an application of such transporting apparatus, to a roll processing unit with such transporting apparatus, and to a method for transporting a roll.

EFFECT: safe transportation of the roll is ensured as a result.
