SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of fruit growing. In the method, before laying the garden, model annual plants of the studied variety-rootstock combination of apple trees are placed according to the following planting schemes, consisting of a control planting scheme - 4 m × 1.5-2.0 m with a density of 1666 tr/ha and experimental plants - 4 m × 1.0 m with a density of 2500 tr/ha and 4 m × 0.5 m with a density of 5000 tr/ha, with subsequent substantiation of the optimal distances between trees in a row in apple plantations on dwarf and semi-dwarf rootstocks according to the diagnostic criterion, for which use the shoots of the continuation of the central conductor and lateral branches of the first order of branching of young plants. As a diagnostic criterion, the crown compactness coefficient is used, which is determined by the ratio of the average lengths of the shoots of the continuation of the central conductor and the lateral branches of the first order of branching, measured at the end of the growing season of plants, and determines the maximum permissible compaction of trees of a particular variety-rootstock combination in a row by distance, at fulfillment of the following conditions: the average length of the extensions of the central conductor and the ratio of the average lengths of the shoots of the extension of the central conductor and the lateral branches of the first order of branching reach maximum values ​​in the experimental planting schemes, and the ratio of the average lengths of the shoots of the continuation of the central conductor and the lateral branches of the first order of branching is equal to or greater than 1.2.

EFFECT: method accelerates the determination of the maximum permissible compaction of trees of a specific variety-rootstock combination of an apple tree in a row, which is carried out even before the planting of the orchard and provides the maximum effect of early maturity, while simplifying the measurement of diagnostic indicators presented in digital terms.
