FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to non-destructive methods of monitoring the state of material, in particular to a method of determining embrittlement of a material, including during operation of a structure. Indentation is performed on the surface of the article (sample) in the initial state, which is guaranteed to comply with standard requirements. In the process of indentation, a diagram is recorded in coordinates "force on indenter - depth of indenter penetration" or "penetration depth of indenter - time". Cracking of the article (sample) during indentation is determined from analysis of the indentation diagram by the presence of abrupt jumps on the diagram or abrupt changes in its configuration. Load at which cracking occurred is determined from the diagram. Basic characteristics of embrittlement of the article (sample) are either the minimum load on the indenter, at which cracking is recorded, or the relative number of indentations leading to cracking, or both of these parameters. At the second stage, indentation is performed on the surface of the analysed article (sample) from the same material. At the same time the indentation procedure should repeat exactly the one implemented when obtaining the basic embrittlement characteristics. Deterioration of the article (sample) embrittlement characteristics in the analysed state, in comparison with the base state, testifies to its increased embrittlement.
EFFECT: increasing the accuracy and reducing the complexity of determining the embrittlement of the material based on the results of surface indentation.
