SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for decontaminating a metal surface contaminated with radioactive substances by contacting a decontaminating solution, containing a complexing agent and a transition metal ion, which is selected from a group comprising zinc, nickel, cobalt and mixtures thereof. Complexing agent is selected from hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, nitric acid, methanesulphonic acid and carboxylic acids such as nitrilotriacetic acid, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, oxalic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid and picolinic acid, and salts thereof.

EFFECT: invention enables decontamination with fewer cycles and/or with fewer contaminated ion-exchange resins.
