FIELD: computer engineering.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to computer engineering for real-time collaboration in a handwriting environment. Technical result is achieved by a method in which: a handwriting point for a handwritten stroke and a user identifier of a user are received in a computing device; determining, in a computing device, a presence area on a shared ink canvas for a user, wherein the presence area is part of the shared ink canvas, which contains a group of handwritten strokes from a user; determining in the computing device a proposed location for the ink presence indicator based on the ink input point and the presence area; handwriting presence indicator is rendered in a computing device in a graphical user interface displaying a shared ink canvas.

EFFECT: improved identification of which users have created which content, when multiple users perform real-time collaboration within an application using digital ink input.
