FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for producing alkyl mercaptan, wherein alkyl alcohol is subjected to a reaction with hydrogen sulphide in the presence of a catalyst containing or consisting of a substrate and 5 to 20 wt.% promoter as calculated for the total weight of the catalyst. The substrate contains or consists of titanium dioxide, zirconium dioxide, and/or a mixture thereof. The promoter constitutes an alkali metal oxide. The alkali metal oxide is sulfidised during the catalyst start phase.
EFFECT: higher activity and selectivity of the methanol thiolation catalyst.
