FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for modifying natural cellulose-containing sorbents and can be used for water treatment to extract heavy metals ions. The proposed method for modifying cellulose sorbents is carried out in 2 stages: at the first stage, the sorbent is treated with an oxidizing agent selected from sodium metaperiodate, iodic acid or sodium hypochlorite, at an oxidizing agent concentration of 0.1–0.3 M, at a solution pH of 2.5–4, 5 with solution/sorbent module 15–50, at the temperature of 40–55°C, within 2–4 hours, until the content of aldehyde groups in the sorbent is 10–12%; at the second stage, the treatment of the oxidized sorbent is carried out with a 2–8% (by weight) solution of L-arginine hydrochloride at a solution pH of 7.5–9.5 for 30–60 minutes with a solution/sorbent module of 15–50 at a room temperature. The sorbent is cotton or wood pulp, short flax fiber, sawdust or Jerusalem artichoke stalks.

EFFECT: invention allows to increase the degree of extraction of heavy metal ions.
