FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention is related in particular to chemical and thermal treatment of steel products, and in particular to the processes of gas carburizing of steel products, and can be used in mechanical engineering to harden the surface layers of steel parts, which require a reduction in surface wear. The method includes heating to saturation temperature in a gaseous medium in presence of a catalyst and exposure at this temperature, sodium nitrite in the amount of 5-6 grams is used as a catalyst, placed in the cores of refractory clay balls, the balls are evenly placed before carburizing among the products at the rate of 1 ball for 32 kg of products.
EFFECT: hardening of surface layers of steel products in a gaseous medium using a single-component catalyst.
