FIELD: magnetorheology.
SUBSTANCE: compositions of magnetorheological suspensions (MRS) can be used as a working medium for optical and mechanical processing (polishing) of the surface of a wide range of water-soluble crystals used as optical elements in instrument-making, electronics and other industries, for example, water-soluble crystals of the KDP group, such as soft polymer polymethyl methacrylate, microstructured polycrystalline zinc sulfide and water-soluble monocrystalline potassium dihydrogen phosphate. The MRS contains, in wt.%: glycol ether - 19.0; colloidal silicon dioxide - 0.5; nanopowder of silicon, aluminum, titanium or cerium (IV) oxides - 0.5; dodecan-1-ol - 0.8; carbonyl iron powder - up to 79.2.
EFFECT: developed magnetorheological suspension is highly stable and provides a surface roughness value of water-soluble crystals of the KDP group of no more than 15 Å after polishing.
