FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of extracting bromine from a chloride solution. The method involves oxidizing bromide to elemental bromine at the anode of a two-chamber electrolyzer. The method is characterized by the following: the anode and cathode spaces of the electrolyzer are separated by a diaphragm made of aluminum oxide, the anode is a titanium plate coated with a layer of a mixture of molybdenum and manganese oxides, and the cathode is a mesh of platinized titanium. The process is carried out at a current density of 0.4–4.3 A/dm2, the initial composition of the solution is 0.5 mol/l NaCl + 0.001–0.01 mol/l NaBr, the pH of the test solution is maintained using a phosphate buffer solution in the range of 4–6. After electrolysis, the solution from the anode chamber containing bromine is distilled off with steam and the bromine content is determined by adding excess potassium iodide and subsequent titration against the substituent with a standardized solution of sodium thiosulfate.
EFFECT: using the proposed method makes it possible to obtain bromine without releasing chlorine.
