FIELD: organic chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry, specifically to synthesis of benzoic acid used in agriculture, food, chemical, petrochemical, pulp and paper, textile, biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. Method of producing benzoic acid involves oxidation of toluene in a liquid phase with an oxygen-containing gas at high temperature and under pressure, in the presence of cobalt and manganese catalysts as basic and bromides as a promoter and is characterized by that the catalyst used is a mixture pre-treated with ultrasound to obtain an emulsion of an aqueous solution of potassium bromide with a solution of cobalt and manganese oleates in toluene. Mixture contains 0.02–2.00 g of cobalt and manganese and 0.01–0.50 g of bromine per kg of toluene, the process is carried out at a constant temperature in range of 120–280 °C, pressure in range of 6–40 bar, wherein constant temperature fluctuations do not exceed range of 10–20 °C.

EFFECT: reduced induction period of reaction and increased output of end product.
