SUBSTANCE: invention relates mainly to signal processing and, in particular, to a method for estimating and compensating for in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) imbalance (In-phase and Quadrature (I/Q)), as well as communication equipment. Method for estimating in-phase and quadrature imbalance (I/Q) in communication equipment is carried out using an adaptive filter in a looped architecture of communication equipment for estimating and compensating for combined frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance of a transmitter TX/receiver RX. This combined frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance of the transmitter TX/receiver RX is estimated using a reference signal and two different phase shifts between the heterodyne (LO) signal of the TX transmitter and the RX LO signal of the receiver. Resulting two estimates of the combined frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance of the transmitter TX/receiver RX are used to calculate the contributions separately by the transmitter TX and an RX receiver into a combined frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance of the transmitter TX/receiver RX. Calculated contribution values can then be used to compensate for the combined frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance of the transmitter TX/receiver RX in the time domain.
