FIELD: metallurgy; machine building.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for surface hardening of metals, and can be used in the manufacture of parts operating under wear conditions in aggressive media, as well as parts exposed during operation to aggressive environment. Method involves heating to temperature of 900–1,100°C, holding in a saturating mixture of gases consisting of 50% nitrogen and 50% argon, and subsequent cooling, wherein holding is carried out for 3–5 hours, and cooling is carried out in the flow of said mixture of gases.
EFFECT: increased thickness of nitrided layer with reduction of process duration.
