FIELD: production of titanium. SUBSTANCE: method involves thermostatically controlled introduction of titanium tetrachloride and maintaining temperature gradient between inlet wall and converter wall within the range of 100-300 C; providing pulsed mixing, with pulses being generated by gas pressure. Apparatus has converter 1 with cover 2, magnesium inlet 3, titanium tetrachloride inlet 4 provided with outer enclosure 5, mixing mechanism with pipe 6 and pulsator 7. Apparatus is further provided with outlet 8 for discharging titanium and magnesium chloride mixture. Method allows converter capacity to be increased by 7 times. EFFECT: increased efficiency, simplified construction and improved quality of spongy titanium. 1 dwg, 1 tbl
