FIELD: medicine. SUBSTANCE: method involves irradiating open empyema with the aid of intracavitary ultraviolet radiation device daily or in a day in dependence of the state of pleural cavity under bacteriological control till full sanitation, irradiation being carried out for 1-3 min in the dependence of infectious agent. Maximum effect was achieved under action of ultraviolet radiation of the device upon blue pus bacillus and colon bacillus, staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus hemolyticus proved to be more resistant. Empyema cavity is fully sanitized after 3-5 procedures of ultraviolet radiation. EFFECT: enhanced sanitation activity. 2 cl, 2 dwg
