FIELD: electrometallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method of monitoring carbonization process of a starting electrode involves the steps of: measuring an electromotive force in an "electrode-furnace bottom" circuit, determining temperature in characteristic point of the electrode working end from the measured electromotive force value and equation relating a temperature to electromotive force and correcting carbonization process from the obtained temperature value. The method is characterized in that emergency conditions at carbonization and use of self-baking electrodes are excluded. EFFECT: increased yield due to enhanced utilization factor of operating time. 3 dwg
