FIELD: automation of electrothermal processes. SUBSTANCE: basic electrical parameter for heating furnace is determined from empirical mathematical expression as a function of thermal state of bath and self-sintering electrode before actuation of the furnace, standard type and size of the furnace and the kind of final product. The thermal state of the furnace bath is determined from variation of d-c voltage in the electrode- ground circuit measured at the moment of furnace shutdown and during idling period before furnace actuation. For maintaining the thermal state of the furnace at a certain level the furnace is periodically actuated for heating once the aforementioned voltage reaches its minimum acceptable value.
