FIELD: mining industry. SUBSTANCE: mineral resource is supplied into detection zone. Then mineral source is irradiated with electromagnetic radiation and electromagnetic radiation is detected after it interacted with the mineral source (in two wavelength ranges). Corresponding intensities X and Y of electromagnetic radiation under test are measured and mineral source is separated according to quality sorts. Average values of intensities are measured preliminary for several values of quality. Wavelength ranges of electromagnetic radiation under test are chosen in such a way, that intensity Y changes in one direction when quality and intensity X change, and it should change oppositely if value of quality is kept constant but X changes. Quality q of mineral source is determined from two minimal values of square roots taken from sums of squares of differences between detected intensities and average values of intensities for several values of quality.
