FIELD: continuous casting practice. SUBSTANCE: for accurate monitoring defects in the operation of the mould oscillating means, current positions of the points of intersection of a normal to a plane, immovably fixed to the mould at a given angle, with an auxiliary plane, spaced a given distance apart from the mould, are measured and a standard value of an average meaning of the deviations of the points of intersection of said normal during a complete revolution of the shaft of the oscillating means is determined. If a measured average deviation from the standard value exceeds a given figure, steps are taken to identify a misadjustment or a play in bearings of the oscillating means which may lead to a breakdown. Moreover, the moduli of the differences in the sums of current deviations of the points of intersection, which the normal to the plane inclined at the given angle to the mould makes with the auxiliary plane, from their average values in the course of the first and last quarters of a turn of the shaft driving the oscillating means as well as during the second and third quarters are determined. If these differences exceed the specified value, this is an indication of dangerous plays in the eccentric or the fork of the frame of the oscillating means respectively.
